On the 7th June 1942 Axis aircraft dropped butterfly
bombs also called 'crackers'. These were dropped in containers which burst
on impact throwing out hundreds of grenades the size of cigarette tins.
Some of these exploded at once while others were detonated by a vehicle going
over them.
