Grand Harbour & Marsamxett Harbour
The following 6 photos were supplied courtesy of Norman Tarrant & show areas of Grand Harbour
HMAS Australia in Grand Harbour. No date to this photo but likely to be late '30's. Photo courtesy of Norman Tarrant. |
Valletta & Floriana

1935. |
Taken March 1937. Entrance to Grand Harbour. Valletta middle left. |
Taken March 1937. Grand Harbour. Valletta top left. |
Taken January 1937. Senglea bottom looking towards Floriana. Floating crane can be seen in the bottom / middle of the photo. This was later used to help protect HMS Illustrious from low level bombers in 1941. Floating dry dock to the left. |
Taken May 1936. I'm guessing it could be Floriana towards Marsa. |
The 'Knight of Malta' taken in
Grand Harbour taken in April 1936 |
Unloading a Swedish ship pre WWII,
May 1936 |
The merchant ship may be either
Brisbane Star or Melbourne Star. The beached wreck in the foreground
may be the minesweeper HMS Abingdon. |
Beached ship (minesweeper?) possibly
at Senglea. |
I was given a large envelope of old photos by Len Hesling.
These ranged from Malta to North Africa & even one of the Arctic convoys.
They show views around Manoel Island probably during 1943. Many ships can
be seen in the harbour
including submarines & some landing craft used in the landings on Sicily.
These were quite small snapshots & took some time to expand with decent quality. I scanned them as colour images to show the sepia colours.
