PRU - Photographic Reconnaissance Unit

The task of the PRU was to take photos of enemy shipping & territory. These were passed on to Photo Interpretation & Intelligence units. The Spitfires of 69 Squadron used in this unit were specially modified & stripped of guns to save weight & add speed. Sometimes these aircraft would go out twice a day to cover Sicilian aerodromes & Italian ports. Naples, Taranto or Brindisi could be photographed on successive days. Missions were also flown to Tripoli on the north African coast or Cagliari in Sardinia.
