What Was A Safety Pen ?

A safety pen was a structure with 3 sides. The walls were higher than the aircraft. One aircraft was allocated to each pen. These were constructed out of rock/stone or cans filled with sand.

The object of a pen was to save the aircraft from getting damaged if a bomb fell close to the aircraft. Shrapnel from bomb fragments could render an aircraft un-serviceable. The pen would protect the aircraft from these fragments.
